Why do schools keep a close eye on where students are during the day? It's because they are legally responsible for students while their parents or guardians aren't around.
Students are at school for a certain number of hours each day. During those hours the school is responsible for the students safety, actions, and whereabouts. That's why there are always adults around during recess, lunchtime, on field trips, and during extracurricular activities. And that's why students need an excuse whenever they are absent or late to school or to class.
A student who stays away from school, or is absent from class, without a reasonable excuse is called a truant. Truancy is a crime. If an underage child is truant, the parents or guardians are held legally responsible. Sometimes parents or guardians are fined by the court for failing to make sure that their children attend school regularly.
Also, if a student is truant from school or class an for an excessive number of times, the school truancy officer may file a complaint with court regarding the problem. If this happens, the student and his/her parents (or guardians) will have to go to court and explain the reasons for being truant. This could result in the parents bieng fined and/or the student being placed in the juvenile Court system for probation, community work service, or incarceration in the juvenile detention center.
So, who cares about attendance and truancy? We ALL should!
- Treat others as you would like to be treated. Show respect and courtesy to others. Always remember "MYOB" - Mind Your Own Business.
- Follow instructions the first time they are given.
- All school personnel, school property, and fellow students are to be respected.
- No fighting, rough housing, or horseplay is allowed.
- Borane Middle School is a closed campus. Students are to remain on campus during the school day. Students are to remain in designated areas before school and at lunch. Please do not hang out off campus at any time. At the end of the schoool day you are to leave campus quickly.
- Keep our school clean. Put your trash in the proper place, not on the ground.
- Use of profanity is unacceptable at all times.
- Threatening and bullying will not be tolerated at our school. It is a form of harrassment that is unacceptable. Anyone threatening or bullying another student will be suspended from school.

It was through the process of a survey of the Ray Borane Middle School parents, PTSO, teachers, and student council that a majority of the vote responded that we adopt the District Dress Code. Please refer to the dress code section in Ray Borane Middle School Parent/Student Handbook if you should have any questions. Administration and staff will provide prompt notification to students and parents when a non-compliance issue arises. All discipline will follow the district matrix included within the handbook.

Regular school attendancae is a vital part of every student's education. Your attendance in class will provide you with every opportunity to learn and to fully participate in classroom activities.
Absences, according to District Policy, are allowed for the following reasons:
Illness
Bereavement
Family emergencies
Religious holidays
When a student is absent, parents should phone the school to inform us of the reason for this absence, and then send a note to school with the student when he/she returns.
Students attending less than 90% of the time in a semester will be evaluated thoroughly by school officials to determine if non-attendance should be reflected in retention. Cases involving prolonged illness or unusual circumstances will be reviewed by the school administration. Not included are absences or tardies due to school approved activities (e.g. field trips, performing groups, student government, etc.). Teachers and the administration will remind students and parents of the number of absences if they become excessive. These procedures will be followed when students have habitual unexcused absences.
- When the student has been absent for three consecutive days, the school shall attempt to make a parent contact by phone; if unable to make contact, the Truant Officer will notified and the Truant Officer shall attempt to make a contact.
- When the student has had a fourth absence, the Truant Officer will be notified. He/she will make a home visit and advise the parents what consequences occur if the student does not attend school regularly.
- On the fifth absence, the Truant Officer will file a referral to the juvenile authorities. The Truant Officer will then advise the school administrator of the outcome of the hearing.
- If the student continues to have absences, the Truant Officer will then serve a citation to the parent of the student. A citation will be issued prior to the ninth consecutive day of unexcused absence.
- For students having their tenth day of EXCUSED absence, the Administrator can ask the parent to present a Doctor's written excuse. If the parent fails to do so, the Administrator can have the Truant Officer serve a citation to the parent providing that there is lack of parental responsibilities.
- A written documentation shall be kept on every attempt, contact or on any conference made by the school or by the Truant Officer.
- Middle Schools and the High School will develop in-house procedures for truancy with individual class periods.
A student is tardy when arriving late to class. Tardiness is:
- Disruptive to the teacher and to classmates. It interferes with the lesson and reduces the number of minutes available for instruction.
- Being late to class causes the student to miss information presented to the class. The teacher must repeat instructions and assignments.
- Arriving late shows a lack of consideration for the teacher and for fellow students, and a lack of concern for school rules in general.
- One of the school's objectives is that students be on time for school and for classes. This, in itself, is an educational experience. A young person who is trained in punctuality throughout his/her school career will, more than likely, carry this over into his/her later life and work experience. Being on time is a much admired and respecte character trait in school or any workplace.
Students are to be in their seats when class begins. All tardies will be recorded and used as a classroom managment procedure.
